History
At the site of the National Bank of Greece’s central building on Aiolou Street, there originally stood, during the 19th century, two separate two-storey buildings constructed in the 1840s. On the left was the Domnandos residence, which was acquired in 1845 by Georgios Stavrou and became the location of the first banking branch in liberated Greece. On the right stood the “England” Hotel, owned by entrepreneur Fragkiskos Ferraldis, which was acquired approximately a decade later as the bank’s operations expanded. Both buildings had the same number of floors and identical height, allowing them to be unified relatively easily between 1899 and 1900. Following extensive renovation works and a complete redesign of their exterior in neoclassical style, they were transformed into the unified landmark building known today.
Project
Restauro – Administration Building Renovation / Refurbishment
We present our distinguished intervention at the iconic neoclassical headquarters of the National Bank of Greece, located at 86 Aiolou Street — a project focused on highlighting and preserving the building’s historical identity. Based on an extensive architectural study fully aligned with the building’s heritage designation and preservation requirements, we carried out targeted restoration works and upgrades of high aesthetic and technical standards.
The result combines faithfulness to the building’s historical documentation with contemporary functional and aesthetic requirements, restoring the landmark to its original grandeur. The project is accompanied by high-resolution photographs that showcase the quality of our intervention and the meticulous detail of the restoration works.
